The 8th Annual Choral Leadership Workshop with María Guinand

October 17, 2015 9:00 – 4:00 PM

Festival Chorus
Choristers will participate in a festival choir of over two hundred other high school singers selected from around the Los Angeles area led by Maria Guinand.
Leadership Clinics
All singers will receive a twenty-minute leadership clinic focusing on topics in choral leadership.
Teacher’s Workshop
  • Guest Speaker: Dr. Tram Sparks
Dynamic Rehearsals: The Power of Gestures

As music educators, we aim to be consistently articulate and expressive in our verbal instruction in both the classroom and studio. We are aware that concise and dynamic speech has the potential to motivate and inspire our students, as well as save valuable rehearsal time. Imagine if our conducting gestures – our language of movement – were equally expressive and clear! In our workshop, we will explore the strong connection between gesture and sound (i.e., sonority, color, intonation, etc.) through movement and a brief look at evocative musical examples.
Director and Chaperone Lunch
Directors, chaperones and accompanists are invited to attend the workshop and observe all of the leadership sessions.  In addition they will be provided a special lunch session with USC Thornton Choral and Sacred Music Faculty to allow for further discussion of leadership in the choral field.
All participants experience
  • Campus tour
  • Information session about USC degree programs & performance opportunities
  • Concert featuring the USC Thornton Chamber Singers
  • Leadership sessions focusing on the individual singer’s role in the success of a choral ensemble.
