A VERY SPECIAL WORLD CHORAL DAY 2018 In 2018, a special anniversary makes the World Choral Day even more valuable - the 100th anniversary of the end of the WWI extends the timeframe of this global action and makes possible the virtual participation of choirs around the world for more than one month! November 11th 1918 marks the official end of World War I, the “Big War” that, by its massive destruction, created an irreversible negative impact on mankind’s hope and trust in humanity. As this particular date stands very close to the World Choral Day, typically celebrated on the second Sunday of December, there is a remarkable opportunity to propose a prolonged and globally visible commemoration by starting the series of singing events on November 11th and ending on December 16th, the third Sunday of December 2018. We are compiling a list of concerts and events on our website http://worldchoralday.org/. Participating choirs are encouraged to register all events before they happen. Choirs are also encouraged to download the proclamation (available in 27 languages) and read it at the beginning of their concerts and events. We are also asking for ensembles to kindly upload their materials (photos, videos, concert programs, etc.) on our website with the main goals of increasing global awareness of individual events, and to increase the relevance of this important global celebration. In connection with the World Choral Day celebration, this year individual singers from all continents are invited to join a special initiative of a virtual choir. JOIN THE VOXPOPULI VIRTUAL CHOIR, AN EXTRAORDINARY OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL SINGERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD. THIS VIRTUAL CHOIR WILL BE PRESENTED IN COLLABORATION WITH AN INITIATIVE HONOURING THE FOUNDER OF THE WORLD CHORAL DAY, MAESTRO ALBERTO GRAU IFCM is the proud collaborator of a global initiative connected to the 2018 celebration of the World Choral Day (http://worldchoralday.org/). As a commemoration of the end of World War I (WWI), IFCM andFundación Aequalis invite all singers from all over the world to be a part of the VoxPopuli Virtual Choir, which will perform the winning composition of the 2018 Concurso Internacional de Composición Coral Alberto Grau (Alberto Grau International Choral Composition Competition, https://www.ciccag.org/en/) entitledNada Te Turbe by Carlos Alberto Cordero. This composition has three sections. As a statement of remembrance, the middle section will be performed by ensembles from the countries that suffered the biggest losses during WWI: Austria, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Ensembles invited to perform this section will be selected by IFCM and its network. Choirs belonging to these countries, who wish to be considered will find more information at https://www.ciccag.org/en/virtual-choir-voxpopuli/. As a statement of global peace and unity, the first and last sections of this composition will be performed by individual singers from all around the world. Singers interested in participating in this global event will need to submit individual recordings by October 7th, 2018. The resulting composite of all recordings will be compiled by Fundación Aequalis and a final video will be produced. 12TH WORLD SYMPOSIUM ON CHORAL MUSIC (WSCM2020) WSCM2020 promoted in China and Europe In late July, WSCM2020 Artistic Director John Rosser and Project Manager Juliet Dreaver travelled to Beijing with John’s choir Viva Voce to promote New Zealand’s World Symposium on Choral Music in just two years’ time.

After concert appearances and a very useful meeting with President Emily Kuo-Vong and other IFCM Board members, John and Juliet headed to Estonia to establish WSCM2020 headquarters – right alongside the IFCM booth – at Europa Cantat in Tallinn! This was a wonderful opportunity for in-depth conversations with potential registrants, with choir leaders and other practitioners who were preparing their applications, and with composers and publishers who will travel to Auckland for the Symposium’s music expo. Estonia, country of the ‘Singing Revolution’, was an exhilarating venue for this iconic festival, attracting many fine choirs who braved 30-degree temperatures to perform. After each day’s business was complete, we were able to enjoy some of the many evening performances: highlights being the ‘Night of Choirs’ with groups singing throughout the Old Town, and the ‘Happy Birthday Estonia’ concert at the Song Festival grounds, where 7000 voices sang in multiple languages to celebrate 100 years of Estonian independence.

FIRST MISSION OF CONDUCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS MISSION IN GUATEMALA, LATIN AMERICA This past July the First International Choral Festival in Guatemala took place in Guatemala City. As part of this festival, IFCM's project Conductors Without Borders (CWB) had its first workshop in Latin America with wonderful success. This festival was organised by the Guatemalan organisation Proyecto Corodemia and their leaders Fernando Archila and Julio Edgar Julián, in connection with CWB's coordinator for the Northern Region, Ana Patricia Carbajal, and guest clinicians Maibel Troia (Venezuela) and Susie Wilson(Costa Rica). Through this project, the Federation aims to help with the technical education of choral leaders in all regions of the world and create a sustained effort to develop and strengthen the choral field globally. IFCM'S PRESENCE AT THE MUSIC EXPO OF EUROPA CANTAT One of Europe's major choral festivals, EUROPA CANTAT, was successfully organised in Tallinn, Estonia, 27 July - 5 August 2018, for more than 5000 choral singers and music fans, aged 5 to 85, from 50 countries. During the festival, IFCM was present at the Music Expo with the wonderful team of the 12th World Symposium on Choral Music. During the five Expo days, we had the pleasure to welcome hundreds of people at our booth and tell them more about us and our projects with a special emphasis on the World Choral Day. We also announced relevant updates on upcoming projects, exchanged new ideas and created possible future co-operations. It is also important to mention that, during EUROPA CANTAT, we launched our brand-new flyers recently designed to provide clear informative details on our major projects as well as to present a more consistent IFCM graphical image. It was particularly beneficial to reach out people from the European choral scene who hadn’t heard about IFCM before, in order to start building up a stronger IFCM presence in the continent.
