Krzysztof Penderecki (23 November 1933 – 29 March 2020)

Hoy nos conmueve la noticia de la muerte del Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, uno de los más importantes compositores de nuestro tiempo, un hombre de una personalidad extraordinaria con el cual tuvimos la dicha de poder trabajar en diversas oportunidades conjuntamente con El Sistema.

La Schola Cantorum de Venezuela cantó de  sus obras los 3 motetes (Ut quid Domine, In Pulverem mortis y  Stabat Mater) de la Pasión según St. Lukas, el Credo y la majestuosa ‘Siete Puertas de Jerusalem’ siempre  bajo su dirección. Su música nos cautivó pues constituía un reto emocionante poder cantarla dirigida por él.

Tuve la fortuna de conocerlo años antes en el Festival Otoño de Varsovia cuando yo estudiaba en Inglaterra y trabajé profundamente su música y la de sus compositores contemporáneos en Polonia. Me honró también dirigir el estreno de su Motete 'O Gloriosa Virginum' dedicada al Maestro José Antonio Abreu en sus 70 años.

Gracias Maestro Penderecki por todas sus enseñanzas, por su creatividad y por su amor a Venezuela.

Hacemos llegar nuestras palabras de solidaridad a su viuda Elzbieta Penderecka, a sus hijos y nietos.

Today we are moved by the news of the death of Maestro Krzysztof Penderecki, one of the most important composers of our time, a man with an extraordinary personality with whom we had the joy of working on various occasions together with El Sistema.

The Schola Cantorum of Venezuela sang the 3 motets (Ut quid Domine, In Pulverem mortis and Stabat Mater) of the Passion according to St. Lukas, the Credo and the majestic ‘Seven Gates of Jerusalem’ always under his direction. His music always captivated us as it was an exciting challenge to be able to sing it directed by him.

I was fortunate to meet him years before at the Warsaw Autumn Festival when I was studying in England and I worked deeply on his music and that of his contemporary composers in Poland. I was also honored to conduct the premiere of his Motete 'O Gloriosa Virginum' dedicated to Maestro José Antonio Abreu in his 70s.

Thank you, Maestro Penderecki, for all your teachings, for your creativity and for your love of Venezuela.
